About the Co-op
h3. Mission Statement:
The Durham Co-op Grocery is a member-owned and operated grocery store providing natural, high quality food at reasonable prices. As Co-operators, we share a vision of people working together to achieve mutual and individual social and economic well-being.
By adhering to co-operative principles of open membership, democratic control, shared return on capital, shared labor, fair employment standards, and community participation, we operate a viable business in ways that are socially, politically and environmentally responsible. We promote nuitritional awareness, strong communities, and sustainable agriculture through educating ourselves and others.
h3. History:
The Durham Co-op Grocery started at Duke University in 1971 as a food buying club of 50 students working together to distribute bulk foods and fresh produce. Later taking on the name of The People's Intergalactic Food Conspiracy, our fledgling Co-op grew into a busy community natural foods store.
In 1991 after continued expansion, the membership decided to move the store to it's current location on West Chapel Hill Street. In 1996 in response to demands of this new location, the People's Intergalactic Food Conspiracy began conducting business as the Durham Co-op Grocery.
h3. Co-operative Principles:
The Durham Co-op Grocery subscribes to the following International Co-operative principles:

* Democratic Control
* Member Economic Participation
* Autonomy and Independence
* Education, Training and Information
* Co-operation Among Co-operatives
